1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Help prepare your children for kindergarten through the world of books! Creating a daily habit of reading together is a fun and easy way to interact with young children while helping build early literacy skills.

This program invites parents and caregivers of children ages 0-5 to read 1,000 books to them during their first five years of life.

How to participate

  • Pick up a tracking sheet at the library.
  • Read to your child and mark off every book read.
  • Bring the tracking sheet to the library for a sticker and prize at every 100 book milestone.
  • Upon completion of the program each child receives a free book and their name will be added to our 1,000 books display.

Does reading 1,000 books seem challenging?

We promise it's not as hard as you think!

  • 3 books a day for 1 year- 1,095 books
  • 1 book a day for 3 years - 1,095 books

For questions or more information about this program, please call or contact the Children's Librarian.

Pages & Paws with Porter

Reading is more fun with a friend—especially one with paws! Join us for Pages & Paws with Porter, a special reading program where children can read aloud to Porter, a lovable and friendly therapy dog. Reading to a non-judgmental listener like Porter helps young readers build confidence, improve fluency, and develop a love of books in a relaxed and supportive environment. Perfect for emerging and reluctant readers!

Readers in grades K-5 can register for a 10 minute one-on-one reading session with Porter to practice their reading skills. A guardian must be present with each child during the session. Please arrive 5 minutes before your session begins so we can stay on schedule!
